FC 27 Fans Are Split on EA's Stricter Champions Matchmaking

Why Champions Matchmaking Became This Week's Biggest Argument
FC 27's first few Champions weekends have thrown up a complaint that keeps resurfacing across Reddit threads and X posts: players say they are being drawn against opponents on wildly different records. Someone four or five wins deep gets paired with a player who has barely won a game, and vice versa.
EA has now acknowledged it. In a statement picked up across community coverage, the team said it was investigating an issue with FUT Champions matchmaking tuning and was looking to release a fix before the weekend that would make matchmaking more strict.
And that is where the community split opened up.
The two camps
"Finally, fix it." Players in this camp argue that a 15-game run is too long and too reward-heavy to be decided by who the queue hands you. If one player coasts past soft opponents while another runs into a wall of strong records, the rank you finish on stops measuring anything. This group wants tighter parity even if it means harder games.
"Don't touch it." The counter-argument doing the rounds is blunter: the loose matchmaking made Champions enjoyable. Mid-table players who normally stall out were reaching ranks they had never seen, finishing runs instead of quitting at 3-7, and getting rewards that actually moved their club forward. Stricter matchmaking, they argue, just rebuilds the wall — and EA is "fixing" the one thing that made the mode feel fair to average players.
Both readings are defensible, which is exactly why the thread titles have been so heated.
What actually drives Champions matchmaking
Community guides reading EA's own help documentation line it up like this — treat the specifics as community interpretation rather than published spec:
| Factor | Used? |
| Your location / region | Yes |
| Current Form in the run (wins minus losses) | Yes |
| Platform and cross-play setting | Yes |
| Division, Rank or Skill Rating | Reportedly not used |
Form is said to start at 0 each competition, rise by one per win and fall by one per loss. If that is right, the "tuning" EA is adjusting is how loosely it will widen the Form band before it gives you a game — which explains both the mismatches and why a stricter setting means longer queues and tougher opponents.
Worth noting: title update 1.0.4, which landed on 7 October, carried no gameplay or tuning changes per EA's notes. This matchmaking adjustment is a separate, server-side change.
Why this is a coin story, not just a gameplay one
Champions is one of the biggest coin faucets in FC 27. In its FUT Developer Notes on 1 October, EA said Champions and Rivals have the potential to reward several times more coins than the FC 26 baseline, and that player coin balances across the game were more than 50% higher than at the same point last year.
That matters for the market:
- Easier runs meant more players finishing high and more coins entering circulation.
- Stricter matchmaking likely means fewer high ranks, so slightly less coin injection from rewards each week.
- Less reward-driven supply tends to show up first as firmer prices on meta cards, because fewer players are flush enough to overbid — and a softer discard floor on fodder.
If you were banking on rank rewards to fund a Season 1 squad before it closes on 22 October, that plan just got less reliable.
Our take
EA is probably right on principle — a competitive mode should match on something closer to ability, and rewards that ignore difficulty are not rewards. But the backlash is pointing at a real gap: FC 27's Champions ranks pay steeply at the top (third-party guides quote top-rank payouts in the region of a quarter of a million coins, though their figures disagree, so check the in-game rewards screen), and most players will never reach them. Tighten matchmaking without flattening that reward curve and you simply hand elite players the coins again.
For now, plan your week assuming harder games and a lower average rank. Don't pre-buy a card on the assumption of a big Thursday payout.
