FC 27 Fans Say Destined for Glory Upgrades Are a Coin Trap

The first real FC 27 argument isn't about gameplay — it's about live cards
Five days into FC 27, the loudest Ultimate Team debate on Reddit and X has moved off input delay and onto something more expensive: whether Destined for Glory cards are worth buying at all.
Destined for Glory Team 1 dropped alongside worldwide launch on 25 September (around 10:30 PM IST) — 15 live items, split roughly 5 defenders, 6 midfielders and 4 forwards. Kylian Mbappe headlines at 91 ST, with Nuno Mendes at 89 LB, Alexander Isak at 88 ST and Morgan Rogers at 87 CAM, plus names like Deniz Undav, Orkun Kokcu, Kika Nazareth, Ezri Konsa and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The pitch is simple: these items upgrade all season based on real-world domestic league output, with milestones set by position. The argument is about whether those milestones are actually reachable.
Why players are calling it a trap
The complaint doing the rounds is about the combined goals-and-assists thresholds. Creators and posters crunching last season's numbers point out that only a small handful of players in any big league finish with 20+ combined goals and assists — a couple in Ligue 1 and Serie A, six-ish in the Premier League. If the bar is set there, most of Team 1 will finish the season at +1 OVR or nothing.
The second half of the complaint is the power curve. A +1 in November means very little once the season's real special cards start landing. Players are arguing that a "live" card that gains one point by Christmas is just a normal card with marketing on it.
The other side of the argument
The counter-view in those same threads is blunt and hard to dismiss:
- Buy the card for tonight, not for March. If the item is good right now at the price, the upgrade is a free lottery ticket, not the reason to buy.
- The cheap end is where the value is. Team 1 stretched from roughly 25k at the bottom to multi-million at the top, with the full squad sitting somewhere around 12.5M on PS/Xbox and closer to 4.7M on PC in the first days. Prices move, so treat those as a snapshot.
- A mid-tier card with a good autumn is the real win. Rogers, Undav or Nazareth types cost a fraction of Mbappe and only need one strong run of form to look like a bargain.
Ones to Watch is quietly the better live promo
Worth noting alongside it: Season 1 is the Ones to Watch season (17 September to 22 October). OTW items take +1 for every Team of the Week, Star Performer or Player of the Month inclusion, plus a one-time +1 if the club wins three of its next six domestic league games after 18 September.
That's the crux of the comparison players keep making — OTW upgrades come from selection and club form, which happen often. Destined for Glory upgrades come from individual stat totals, which mostly don't. Same "live" label, very different hit rate.
What it means for your coins
A few things are already visible in the market:
| Situation | Sensible move |
| Expensive DFG forward | Wait — you're paying a premium for an upgrade that may never land |
| Cheap DFG mid-tier | Fine buy if the card is good at the price today |
| OTW items | Better upgrade odds; hold rather than panic-flip |
| Launch dip cards (83–85s) | Best value window of the week |
Worldwide launch was a supply shock, not a demand shock. Every club locked out of early access opened packs and listed them at once, and EA put a higher share of rewards on the Transfer Market with Rivals pack rewards tradeable at launch. That pushed the floor into the 26–30 September window and pulled DFG premiums down with it.
My grounded take: the sceptics are right about the milestones and the optimists are right about the price. Don't pay an upgrade premium on a Destined for Glory card. Pay what the card is worth in your team tonight, and let the season surprise you.
