Why FC 27 Icon Prices Are Climbing and Traders Can't Agree

A quiet price story with very loud opinions

Season 2 of FC 27 runs from 22 October to 3 December, and while most of the noise this week has been about Ultimate Scream Team 2, traders have been arguing about something far less flashy: Base Icons keep creeping upwards. Threads doing the rounds on Reddit in the last few days all circle the same question — why is a card almost nobody is packing getting more expensive six weeks into the cycle?

The most repeated answer in those threads is blunt: too many coins, not enough places to put them.

What EA actually said

In the FUT Developer Notes published on 1 October, EA said coin balances across the FC 27 player base are more than 50% higher than at the same point in the previous cycle. The same notes flagged heavy Transfer Market activity, with more players buying their starting XI straight off the market rather than packing it.

Two things are worth being precise about, because they get mangled in the retelling:

  • That figure describes coins sitting idle in clubs, not a 50% boost to what you earn per match.
  • EA did not say reward income rose by the same amount. A stockpile and a salary are different things.

Either way, the direction is clear enough. More coins chasing a shrinking pool of old Icons is textbook inflation, and the community has worked that out.

The two camps

"Buy now, it only goes one way"

Supply of Base Icons only ever falls. They come from packs most players aren't opening in volume, and every one fed into an SBC leaves the economy permanently. Players on this side also argue that FC 27 is short on big coin sinks right now — no monster SBC, no Evolution worth dumping millions into — so the coins pile up and land on the few cards that never get re-released.

Tracker sites did record some violent moves in late October, with a handful of Base Icons reported to have more than doubled inside a fortnight. Treat exact figures from third-party trackers as a snapshot, not gospel.

"Hold until the promos land"

The other camp says paying a multi-million premium in early November is exactly how you donate coins. Their case: a Black Friday-style event with Icon content would dump supply overnight, and that has historically been when older Icons sit at their cheapest.

Worth stressing: no FC 27 Black Friday promo has been confirmed by EA. Guides pencil in Friday 27 November as the calendar equivalent, and "Thunderstruck" is a name carried over from previous years, not an announcement. Anything beyond that is unconfirmed.

Our read

Both camps are half right, and the split is about which Icon.

Card typeRealistic riskSensible move
Top-end meta Base IconsHigh — first to be re-released or SBC'dWait for promo supply
Mid-tier Icons nobody chasesLow — thin supply, thin demandBuy if you actually want to use it
Icons you're buying purely to flipHighest — you're betting against a promoSit this one out

The flaw in the pure "hold" argument is that a promo only crashes the cards it touches. The flaw in the "buy now" argument is that it treats a coin glut as permanent, when the first serious SBC of Season 2 can soak up millions in a weekend.

One more thing worth watching: tracker data from the same late-October window showed Icons falling as well as spiking. This isn't a one-way market, however the loudest threads make it sound.

Dates to keep in your calendar (IST)

  • Ultimate Scream Team 2 — live since 30 October; the promo is scheduled to close around 11:30 PM IST on 6 November, with the token store reported to stay open roughly a week longer.
  • Season 2 ends — 3 December.
  • Possible Black Friday window — late November, unconfirmed.

If you're buying a player to actually play with, buy it now and enjoy it. If you're buying to flip into a promo nobody has confirmed, you're taking the worse side of this argument.
