The FC 27 Meta: Formations and Tactics That Actually Win Games

FC 27 is a defending game again
EA spent years being told that AI defending and assisted through balls had hollowed out competitive matches. FC 27 is the answer, and it changes what a good squad looks like.
Manually controlled defenders jockey noticeably faster than they did in FC 26, and jockeying now performs better for players without the PlayStyle when their defensive attributes are strong. At the same time, the extra exit-sprint advantage Jockey used to hand out has been cut back. The practical effect is simple: holding a line and tackling yourself beats standing off and letting the AI do it.
Attackers were not left behind. Teammates make better overlapping, underlapping and curved runs, corners now play out in two phases, and current-gen players get off-balance dribbling, which lets agile players carry momentum through contact instead of collapsing at the first shoulder.
Attributes matter again
This is the change that should shape what you buy. The speed boost that PlayStyle and PlayStyle+ applied while dribbling and accelerating has been reduced, which narrows the gap between tiers and pushes raw Acceleration and Dribbling back to the front.
Shooting moved the same way. Low Driven no longer adds shot velocity — speed now comes from shooting attributes and how hard you press the button, with the PlayStyle keeping only its accuracy help. Heading Accuracy and the attributes around it carry more weight in the air than they have in years.
PlayStyles are not dead. They just stopped being the only thing worth paying for.
The formations winning right now
4-2-1-3 is the shape to beat. It is the most-run formation in early access after 4-4-1-1, and it gives you the cleanest balance between a protected back line and a front three that links naturally with the CAM.
4-4-1-1 is the counter-attacking pick, and the most used overall among both tracked squads and pros. If you like absorbing pressure and hitting crosses with late runners, this is your shape.
4-2-3-1 Wide stays excellent with two CDMs, a CAM and width outside them. 4-4-2 remains the easiest formation to learn, with two strikers keeping attacks short and direct. 4-1-2-1-2 (2) is the narrow possession option if you would rather dictate the pace.
Custom tactics: 4-2-1-3
- Build-up: Counter
- Defensive approach: Balanced
- Depth: 50–55
- Chance creation: Forward Runs
- CDMs: one on Holding (Defend), one on Box Crasher (Balanced)
- CAM: Shadow Striker (Attack)
- Wingers: Inside Forwards (Attack)
The Holding CDM is what makes the shape work. Leave both midfielders free to push and the counter-attacks you invite will go straight through the middle.
Custom tactics: 4-4-1-1
- Build-up: Counter
- Defensive line: 45
- CMs: Box-to-Box (Balanced) + Holding (Defend)
- Wingers: Inside Forwards (Balanced)
Sit deeper, win the ball, and let the Box-to-Box midfielder arrive late in the box.
What this means for your coins
If attributes carry more of the load, the cards that were priced on a PlayStyle badge alone are the ones most exposed to a correction. Pace merchants with genuine Acceleration and Dribbling will hold value. So will defenders with real defensive attributes, now that jockeying rewards them, and tall forwards with proper Heading Accuracy.
The other half of the job is timing. Metas move on patches, and the players who profit are the ones holding coins when the market reprices rather than the ones holding cards. Build a squad that wins games this week, and keep a buffer for the first balance pass.
