FC 27 Fans Are Split as the PlayStyle+ Lab Goes Live

The feature nobody expected to be this divisive

EA has confirmed that the PlayStyle Lab levels up during Future Stars Week 2, with the first UEFA Star Performers becoming eligible for PlayStyle+ upgrades from 17 October. Promo content in FC 27 has been dropping around 22:30 IST, so expect the Lab step-up to land in that window rather than first thing in the morning.

On paper this is a quality-of-life feature. In practice, the FC community has spent the last few days arguing about whether it fixes the power curve or breaks the market.

What actually changes

The Lab is an Evolutions-style system for shaping the PlayStyles on eligible Player Items. FC 27 reworks how it behaved last year:

FC 26FC 27
Starting stateEligible cards began blankCards arrive with some PlayStyles already applied
PlayStyle+ cap5 per item3 per item
RequirementsBroadly uniformVary by PlayStyle — some take more time or effort
CostFree by the end of the cycleNot stated by EA yet

That last row is where a lot of the noise is coming from. EA has not said whether Lab access will cost coins, FC Points or nothing at all, and players are filling the silence with worst-case guesses.

The two camps

The "finally" camp. Players on Reddit and the EA forums are arguing that the cut from five PlayStyle+ to three is the single best balance decision EA has made in years. Their logic: when an endgame promo card carries five PlayStyle+ and heavily boosted stats, it stops being the same footballer and starts being a different, strictly better one. Pair the cap with EA's reduced attribute jumps between campaigns and a well-built cheap squad stays competitive deep into the year.

The "this is a nerf in disguise" camp. The pushback is sharper. If the Lab lets you hand-pick PlayStyles yourself, what exactly are you paying a premium for when you buy a meta promo card? Content creators flagged this before launch too, warning that a generous Lab could cook the power curve unless the boosts were cut hard. Add the nerfs already in the game — Quick Step and Rapid giving smaller boosts, Tiki Taka and Pinged Pass losing trap assistance, Low Driven losing its shot speed bump — and the argument is that EA has flattened the things that made expensive cards feel expensive.

The Future Stars wrinkle

Team 2 arrives today, and the live upgrade maths is feeding the same debate. Future Stars items in standard leagues take +1 OVR at 4 starts (capped at 86) and again at 8 starts (capped at 87), with a PlayStyle+ unlocked at 7 combined goals and assists for attackers and midfielders, or 4 clean sheets for defenders and keepers. Only one PlayStyle+ comes through that path, and if the card already has one, you get a base PlayStyle instead. NWSL, MLS, Liga MX and LPF cards run on lower thresholds.

The catch players keep pointing at: anything released at 87 or above gains nothing from the OVR steps. Leaked Team 2 names doing the rounds are unconfirmed until the cards are actually in packs.

My read, and what it means for your coins

Both sides are half right. The cap genuinely compresses the gap between a 50k card and a 2 million card, which is good news if you are building rather than hoarding. But compression cuts the other way too — if the top end stops pulling away, the players who hold value best are the ones with good base stats and a useful PlayStyle+ already attached, not the ones you were planning to fix in the Lab.

Practical move for the next week: do not panic-buy Star Performers on day one at 22:30 IST. Let the Lab requirements become public, see which PlayStyles are cheap to unlock and which are a grind, then buy. Cards whose weakness the Lab can patch cheaply will dip; cards it cannot help will hold.
