FC 27 Fans Are Fighting Over Ultimate Scream's Card Design
Published 2026-10-22 · DB.Coins Blog
Season 2 of FC 27 opened on 22 October and runs through 3 December, and the loudest argument in Ultimate Team this week is not about ratings, pack odds or SBC value. It is about how a card looks.
The complaint: "where is the Halloween?"
Once first looks at the Ultimate Scream design started circulating, trading and leak accounts on X began posting side-by-side images of last year's Scream art next to FC 27's version. The replies lean heavily one way: players are arguing that the new frame does not read as Halloween at all, that there is far too much colour where they expected darkness and decay, and that the horror theme has been sanded down into just another glossy promo card.
The same mood shows up on EA's own forums, where a thread on the promo has posters saying the design does not feel seasonal and taking aim at the art direction in general. A few are blunt enough that we will not repeat the phrasing.
The other side: it is a frame, not a PlayStyle
Plenty of players in those same threads are pushing back, and the counter-arguments are reasonable:
- Card art does nothing on the pitch. The frame has never changed a single stat.
- Scream gets this thread every year. Design complaints are close to an annual tradition for this promo.
- Retro cosmetics are reportedly in. Coverage points to FIFA 17, 19 and 20 inspired cosmetics in the event, which is the classic look a lot of the critics say they want back.
- The mechanics matter more. Hero-focused Token Swaps and dynamic upgrades are what will actually decide whether this promo is good.
There is also a practical point worth making: almost everything specific about this promo is still leak-level. Treat it that way.
Confirmed vs unconfirmed
| Detail | Status |
| Season 2 window: 22 Oct - 3 Dec | Confirmed |
| Screaming Grounds Halloween event in The Grounds | Confirmed in EA's launch pitch notes |
| Ultimate Scream in FUT on Fri 23 Oct, around 10:30 PM IST | Widely reported, not officially announced |
| Team 1 names (Ronaldo, Raphinha, Stam, Zola, Paralluelo) | Leak - lineup rated as fairly reliable |
| Exact ratings (Raphinha around 90, several 88s) | Leak and prediction only |
| Hero Token Swaps | Leak |
| Moon-based dynamic upgrades in November and December | Leak, and one report suggests the in-game text may be recycled from last year |
Why design is not purely cosmetic this year
Here is the bit the "it's just a frame" crowd is underrating. FC 27's Gallery gives cards value after they leave your squad, and Holographic versions score more heavily in Set grades despite having identical attributes. That means desirability now has a second home: cards people want to own get hoarded by collectors rather than flipped, which props up price floors long after the promo ends.
A design the community dislikes tends to produce the opposite - fewer collectors holding, more supply back on the market, softer prices in week two.
What it means for your coins
- Expect a fodder squeeze on Friday night IST. Scream SBCs landing late evening usually drag 83-85 rated fodder up while everyone submits at once. If you are holding fodder, that window is your exit.
- Get liquid before the drop, not during it. Gold and untradeable-adjacent stock is easiest to move while hype is still building.
- Do not pay the launch premium. First-day Scream cards, especially a headline Ronaldo item if the leaks hold, carry a hype tax that normally fades within a few days.
- Judge on upgrades, not art. If the moon-based boosts are real, mid-tier Scream cards may be the genuine value, whatever you think of the frame.
Our honest take: the criticism is fair - this design is lighter and glossier than a Halloween promo should be - but it is also the least important thing about the event. Price the cards on their upgrade path, not their border.
